You can’t please everyone….

Is video blogging just a hobby for me or something more? It’s a question I ask myself a lot lately. You see I am at a crossroads, for my own mental well being I need to figure out the answer to that question. If’s it just a hobby, then I need to get on with my life, try to climb the ladder and make as much money as I can, be content and evey once and a while just video stuff. Or…..I decide that maybe I can make a living by doing video and try and do something about it. Step out on a limb and go for broke. I gotta be honest, it’s that whole “broke” thing I worry about.

You see I know in my heart that no one and I mean no one is going to pay me to vlog about my life. I will never make money off the “batman geek”. I have accepted that. Oh, at one time I had grand plans, and no I don’t do drugs. But I did entertain the possibility that I could make money by me being goofy. Heck, it’s part of the reason I called myself “The Batman Geek”. But I realized that I am not that interesting. At least not on video. In person, I am freakin awesome. Trust me.

But with all that said, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that because of “Batman Geek” I could make some money by videoing.(is that even a word?) I mean, I have had some people come to me recently to ask about filming stuff for them. Now, I am not getting paid for the stuff, (well I kinda got paid for the stuff I did for work, I got comp time and got to film on the clock) But the point is, people are starting to think of me. Which is cool. Now if I can start to make some money on the side….that would be even cooler (ok, I know that’s a word, but I am not sure if it is in this context) (shrug)

Well the bottom line is that I have not made up my mind yet. But recently while listening to this song. (which is freaking great by the way and you can buy it from Amazon for only .99, a bargin!) Anyway the song made me realize something very important. What is that? Well if you have already seen the video post, you know what it is. And if you haven’t watched the video yet. Go do so now! Oh, in case you are wondering most of the clips in this video have never been seen because they wern’t “good enough” (that’s what I thought at the time but now….who knows what I will uncover!)

Here’s to vlogging! And if you don’t know, I got a new phone. It does video, it’s crappy video, but it’s video. So I have created a mobile vlog site where I upload 30 seconds of video a day. That’s right, a daily vlog!! It’s not really good, but with all the good stuff out there now, doesn’t watching and subscribing to a crappy mobile vlog seem…right? Sure it does! So go check that out too!

  1. Yay, Heath! See, I only do it because it’s fun. And because I tend to overshare anyway, so videoblogging seems a natural fit. I wouldn’t hope to ever make money from it because it’s not what I ever hope for…did that make sense?

Like the song said, you’ve got to please yourself. And I don’t mean that in a pervy way, either.

Do what you love. For fun or profit. Do it either way.

  2. Thanks a lot, Heath
    I needed that.
It’s worked as an advertisement for me, too – I’ve picked up some great video work purely because of my vlog in the last few months. And it’s shaping the future of how I want to make a living.
It’s a great thing to let go of the wish to have a million viewers, to make money from your vlog, to change the world with it. As I just wrote to Gogen, not enjoying it for what it is and wishing it was something else is a path to frustration, unhappiness and madness.
Hobby is a word with bad connotations.
    Art is a good word.
    You’re a personal video artist.
    Thanks again.

  3. Great message, fun clips.

Your videos prove you can make videos. If you tell enough people you produce, script, edit and shoot video, some of them will eventually want you to do it for them. Make sure you charge them for it, and since they came to you they will be happy to pay.

Otherwise just keep on doing it.

  4. I’ve been trying to get over here to comment since I saw your video after you posted it to twitter.

I have been thinking about this a lot, lately, too.

We are the kind of people who don’t have “shows.” We are basically sharing our life and making video to do that. I think that’s what attracts me to your vlog…the fact that you’re a regular guy who likes to make vids and post them. Thanks for being that and keep it up.

  5. I think we learned over the past several years that no one will pay us to blog about our lives, but that doesn’t mean its not important. Many of us have gotten work BECAUSE we videoblog. It’s like a growing resume.

You’ll get paid to do commercial videos, blogs, and video projects. All the time still making your art.

Those of us working with online video for a living all have gone through this exact moment you’re in. You got to take that leap of faith and hen start hustling! we’ll all help you out.

  6. I love this video.

It was great to see some of the “left over” moments from the cutting room floor. I kept thinking “whoa thats awesome … I don’t remember that!”

bonus points for turning the left over bits into a favorite vlog of its own.
